Our Story

Our River Journey

How it all began

River Murray Houseboats began its journey back in 1994, when a humble three-bedroom vessel named Jackaway was moored along the riverfront in Renmark. With its simple charm and family-friendly layout, Jackaway quickly captured the hearts of holidaymakers seeking a peaceful escape on the Murray. Though modest—with no spa or upper deck—Jackaway laid the foundation for something much greater.

As word spread and demand grew, the business evolved. It was soon rebranded as River Murray Houseboats and moved to a new home on Lock Five Road in Paringa. With the new name came new beginnings—and a growing fleet. From one modest houseboat, the business expanded to include modern, spacious vessels offering upper decks, spas, and all the comforts of a luxury getaway.

For 20 years, Riverland locals Peter and Odette Lutze lovingly built and operated the business. Then in August 2014, they handed over the helm to the next generation: their daughter Jenna and her husband Rob Hughes. Fresh from celebrating the birth of their first son, Rob and Jenna took on the business with big dreams and boundless energy—quickly becoming the youngest houseboat operators on the river.

Since then, River Murray Houseboats has continued to grow—not just in size, but in vision. In 2016, we partnered with Murray River Walk (now Murray River Trails) to help launch an award-winning eco-tourism experience. That same year, Rob and Jenna also welcomed their second son—making it a year of both professional and personal milestones. Rob was the inaugural boat guide, greeting guests each morning and evening—welcoming them aboard for a unique and relaxing stay on the water after days spent exploring the river on guided walks. The collaboration was a perfect match—uniting nature, wellness, and comfort—and still thrives today with a range of immersive river experiences.

In 2017 and 2018, we earned silver in the South Australian Tourism Awards for Unique Accommodation. In 2019, we took home gold and proudly became national finalists in the Australian Tourism Awards—a testament to our team’s passion for creating unforgettable river holidays.

Navigating Challenges

Like many in the tourism industry, we faced turbulent waters during the COVID-19 pandemic. With travel plans changing overnight, we shifted our focus to domestic tourism—offering Australians a safe, private way to reconnect with nature in their own backyard. With enhanced cleaning protocols and flexible booking policies, we welcomed guests back on board with peace of mind.

Then in 2022, the Murray River flood brought another challenge—forcing us to close for five months. It was a difficult time, not just for us but for the entire Riverland. But with community spirit, government support (including the River Revival Vouchers), and the enduring appeal of the river, we bounced back—stronger and more motivated than ever.

Building for the Future

In 2022, we completed one of our most exciting projects yet – High River: a six-bedroom, six-bathroom luxury spa houseboat custom-built for our partners at Murray River Trails. Designed for elegance, comfort, and eco-conscious living, High River is a standout vessel used exclusively for their guided walking tours and group getaways along the Murray.

We were also honoured to be featured in Cosi’s bestselling book, Top 100 Places to Visit in SA.

In 2023, after nearly a decade of nonstop growth, we took a step back to reconnect as a family – embarking on a half-lap of Australia in a caravan with our two young boys. The journey was restorative, giving us a fresh perspective and renewed passion for our business. While we explored, a trusted manager kept the boats running smoothly—and we returned more excited than ever for what’s to come.

2025 and beyond

This year marks another major milestone for River Murray Houseboats. We’re entering the South Australian Tourism Awards once again, have launched our brand-new website, and unveiling a fresh new logo that reflects our evolution – while staying true to our core: nature, relaxation, and rivertime living.

We’re also proud to be featured again on South Aussie with Cosi, showcasing the magic of houseboating even in the cooler months.

And perhaps most exciting of all – Little Gem 2.0 is on its way. A reimagining of one of our most beloved vessels, this next-generation houseboat will offer the ultimate blend of style, innovation, and comfort. It’s a symbol of everything we’ve become—and where we’re headed.

Today

From a single boat to a fleet of nine luxurious spa houseboats, River Murray Houseboats has grown into one of the leading tourism businesses in the Riverland. We’re still family-owned, still passionate about what we do, and still grounded in the simple joy of time spent on the river.
